Olga and Vasil

Olga and Vasil’s story represents the resilience and hope we witness each day. Their house, once a warm and vibrant family home, was destroyed in the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine. In the intense shelling, not only did they lose their roof, windows, and walls, but they also lost their memories—every cherished photo album, every keepsake from a lifetime together was reduced to ash. Their home was left empty, with walls stripped of plaster and a charred floor where their living room carpet had once been.

With the help of local and international charities, Olga and Vasil managed to get their roof repaired and their windows replaced. This was a crucial first step, giving them a structure to call home again. But without a reliable source of heat, the thought of enduring the bitter Ukrainian winter was daunting. That’s when we had the opportunity to step in. Our team installed a stove for them, providing not just warmth, but also a sense of stability and comfort amidst unimaginable loss.

The first time Olga and Vasil lit the stove, a sense of normality began to return. In that simple flame, there was hope—a reminder that despite everything they had lost, there was a future waiting to be rebuilt. And that future could start with something as small, yet vital, as the warmth of a fire.

Their courage inspires us daily, and we are honoured to have played a small part in helping Olga and Vasil reclaim their home.
